Cambelts

The most important maintenance item in your engine is the cambelt (also know as the Timing Belt). The cambelt’s job is to keep the camshaft and crank timed as it should be. Over time the cambelt will stretch and as a result the engine timing may get delayed. To avoid nasty surprises, you should have your cambelt checked annually.

How often should I change my cambelt?

Most manufacturers recommend a cambelt change every 40,000 to 60,000 miles or roughly every 5 years.

What happens if my cambelt snaps?

It depends on what kind of engine you have; in an interference type engine serious, expensive damage can be caused by a snapped cambelt, in a non-interference engine, no damage occurs and a new belt can just be popped on. Give us a call at Hardy's Garage if you have any questions.
